Tribute to the Legends (aka Bob Marley Day) has been annual event in San Diego for over a quarter century and now Bob Marley Day has spread from Tijuana to San Francisco and beyond. The festival always features the biggest and brightest stars from Jamaica, Europe, and Africa. Steel Pulse, Third World, Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh, Black Uhuru, Lucky Dube, Alpha Blondy, Yellowman, and Shaggy and just a some of the greats who have perfomed for Makeda’s tribute to Brother Bob Marley. | Gregory Isaacs The Cool Ruler |
Gregory Isaacs is a Reggae singer/songwriter, born Gregory Anthony Isaacs on 15 July 1950 in Fletchers Land, Kingston, Jamaica, and is known as “The Cool Ruler” for his seductive crooning vocal style. Gregory attributes his greatest musical influences to R&B greats Sam Cooke and Percy Sledge, in addition to Delroy Wilson, Alton Ellis and Ken Boothe. In the late 1960’s, Gregory first performed in a vocal trio called The Concords, after being encouraged by Byron Lee; but 1970 the group had split up and the singer songwriter would form his own imprint, African Museum. |

Born Clifton George Bailey III on April 13, 1967, in the rural parish of St. Mary, Capleton earned his future stage name from friends who were so impressed with his sharp reasoning skills that they named him after the most famous lawyer in town. From a tender young age, he was a lover of the traveling sound systems, sneaking out at night to catch the vibes until dawn. But it wasn’t until he turned 18 and moved to Kingston that he was able to realize his destiny. It was Stewart Brown, owner of a Toronto-based sound called African Star, who gave the untested artist his first break, flying him to Canada for a stage show alongside giants like Ninjaman and Flourgon. Cocoa Tea was one of the few early dancehall stars to carve out a consistent, productive career as the genre evolved over the years. His cool-toned, laid-back vocals were perfect for sweet, smooth lovers rock, and gave him a distinct identity amid his more aggressive peers. Still, he was also capable of toughening up his sound on his cultural protest material, which was often sharply perceptive. The Twinkle Brothers hail from the north coast of Jamaica in the ghettos of Falmouth, the Parish of Trelawny. The two brothers, Norman and Ralston Grant, were baptized in the church of Anglican Diocese. They started singing in the Sunday school choir and concerts at the age of six and eight respectively. At that time they started to make their own instruments since they could no afford to buy them. They made guitars and drums from various tin cans (garbage can, sardine, milk, etc.) and fishing line. She is a Grammy nominated singer, DJ, songwriter, actress, entrepreneur, educator and humanitarian. Her odyssey began in the ghetto of Denham Town, Kingston in the midst of the exploding Jamaican music scene and has grown to become one of Jamaica’s top entertainers and a Global Icon.
